Welcome back, Chirp Fam! We’re back with our 2nd ever newsletter and after going through how the first one went my dumbass bird brain realized it was way too fucking long. We’ve got week 12 college football power rankings coming at ya.

Week 12 CFB Power Rankings

ESPN just unveiled their Week 12 CFB bracket and to be honest, most of you probably didn’t tune into the show. Shoutout to Disney for the YouTube TV ESPN/ABC pull that us sports fans are really enjoying. The lack of being able to watch the MNF and college gamedays has been amazing!

No surprises at the top right now from their list. USF is the last power 5 conference automatic qualifier in the bracket prediction and Miami makes it in over OU as the ACC champ.

Without further ado (is that the right word?) here is Mr Chirp’s Week 12 Power Rankings.

1) Ohio State 9-0:

Ohio State has been gangbanging opponents in Big Ten play so far this season. Steamrolling everyone they face, with the most points allowed this season being 16 to Illinois.

This team is firing on all cylinders, but to be honest they haven’t faced any stiff competition all year. Aside from the week 1 win against UT, this team hasn’t been battle tested and probably won’t be until the Big Ten championship.

Julian Sayin is playing at an elite heisman trophy finalist level and duo wide receivers Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate are the best 1-2 punch in college football. This team doesn’t have any weaknesses on paper. The defense is strong led by Arvell Reese, Sonny Styles, and Caleb Downs (all early-mid 1st round picks).

This team relies heavily on their top ranked defense. They’re allowing 5 fewer points per game than the 2nd ranked in the country at just 8.1 per game. They’re also allowing 20 fewer yards per game than the 2nd ranked as well at just 217.

This team doesn’t take the ball away much, but they just clamp. Whether it’s stopping the run or pass it doesn’t matter. Teams just can’t fucking move the ball against the Buckeyes. But, and it’s a big but… they haven’t really faced anyone yet.

2) Texas A&M 9-0:

What a season it’s been so far for the Aggies. After going 8-5 last season, no player in the nation has arguably improved more than quarterback Marcel Reed. A top 5 heisman contender right now, the A&M QB is posting great numbers through the air and on the ground.

The concern with him is his accuracy. A&M ranks pretty middle of the pack in the nation when it comes to 3rd down conversion percentage, and facing some top defenses in the playoff could give them trouble to keep drives alive when it matters most.

They’ve had some fucking shootouts this year against Arkansas and Notre Dame to name a few. The defense is paper thin in the secondary and they don’t force many turnovers. They rank in the hundreds in the nation in turnovers forced per game.

There’s definitely concern for them to survive against a top defense like Ohio State, Indiana, and even Texas Tech. Their run game is solid led by Rueben Owens and Le’Veon Moss. The issue now is that Moss might be sidelined for a few more weeks. If he can come back for the Texas game that would be huge.

The biggest W for the Aggies on the defensive side of the ball is their ability to get off the field. They’re 1st in the nation in defensive 3rd down conversion percentage and 2nd in sacks per game. If they keep opponents to long 3rd downs it’s night night.

3) Indiana 10-0:

The Hoosiers, the darlings of college football this year are still undefeated after squeaking out a win on the road against Penn State last weekend. Prior to this matchup they were dismantling opponents for the past 3 weeks.

With a signature win at Oregon and an absolute route over Illinois earlier in the year, IU has faced tougher matchups than OSU. If they handle business against Wisconsin and Purdue a Big Ten championship of the top 2 teams in the country should be a thriller to see how legit the Hoosiers are going into the playoff.

Fernando Mendoza has gone from laughing stock Cal starter to potential number 1 NFL draft pick this year. This dude literally blew this game last year against Miami, I still can’t get over that.

The squad has three fire receivers, three stud running backs, and a top 5 yards allowed and scoring defense on the season. They’re also top 10 in the nation in sacks per game, the front 7 gets to opponents QB’s at will and that could be the difference maker if they manage to beat OSU and go deep the next two months.

4) Texas Tech 9-1:

The Red Raiders beat the brakes off of BYU to give them their first loss of the season last weekend. The one loss Tech posted on the season so far came without their starting quarterback Behren Morton who has been amazing for the tortilla heads this year.

Linebacker Jacob Rodriguez deserves heisman consideration for what he’s doing on the field right now. This dude hit sticks players every week and has 3 INT’s on the season as well.

The wreck em faithful has the 6th best offense in the country and 2nd best scoring defense as well. This team is about as balanced as it gets and they are legit title contenders. They rank 1st in the nation in rushing defense. Put em up against Georgia or Notre Dame and they should bounce em in the playoff.

Running back Cameron Dickey is a beast of a player and defensive end David Bailey is leading college football with 11.5 sacks. This team wins in all facets of the game and should lock in as the 5 seed or better based on their remaining schedule.

If things shake out crazy in the SEC they could sneak their way into a first round bye and surprise a lot of people who haven’t watched them yet this season.

5) Alabama 8-1:

The Crimson Tide are rolling right now since losing in week 1. They clapped through their brutal stretch to start SEC play beating Georgia, Vandy, Mizzou, Tennessee, and more. A matchup this weekend against OU should be a fun one (that we can’t watch).

Quarterback Ty Simpson has played himself into a potential top 10 NFL pick this season as well. With only 1 INT on the season, he is managing games extremely well and taking advantage of the weapons on the outside that Bama has.

The wide receivers on Bama are nice as fuck, but the most worrisome part of their squad right now is the run game. Bama ranks 113 in the country in rushing yards per game.

They have a top 15 defense across most major categories and rank 4th in the country in turnover margin per game. I think the only way they can make a deep playoff run is if they continue to take care of the ball and force turnovers.

If they come across an opponent who is methodical on offense and wins the time of possession game they could be in deep shit having to rely on the pass without a much needed run game. Indiana, Miami, Ohio State, and Georgia are all opponents who are top 10 in the nation in time of possession percentage who could give them trouble.

6) Oregon 8-1:

The Ducks have handled business for the majority of the season falling only to Indiana. This Oregon team has a top 5 defense, leads the nation in yards per carry, and has playmakers all across the field on both sides of the ball.

The main concern for the Ducks is their strength of schedule. They had a gritty road win against a tough Iowa team last week, but apart from Indiana they’ve played no one. QB Dante Moore went from potential heisman winner early in the year and rocket of a prospect to what the fuck has this guy been smoking the last month.

In the past 4 games he’s thrown 5 TD’s to 4 INT’s, and only averaging 168 yards per game. The passing attack has to get sorted if these guys want a chance to make a playoff run.

Their backfield trio of Noah Whittington, Jordon Davidson, and Dierre Hill Jr is an absolute problem for defenses to handle with them averaging 8 yards a carry combined. They’ve got dogs on the receiving end too with freak freshman WR Dakorien Moore and tight end savage Kenyon Sadiq, but is it enough?

They don’t sack the QB enough, they’re just stingy when it comes to points and yards. They rank 1st in the nation in opponent QB passer rating so the secondary is lit as fuck they just don’t force many turnovers.

7) Georgia 8-1:

The Georgia Bulldawgs are having about as classic of a Georgia season as possible. Kirby Smart’s boys took an early SEC L to Bama at home in a hard fought game and have since rattled off 5 straight W’s to get back in the national mix.

Mr Chirp is not a believer in Gunner Stockton and this passing attack one bit. These guys throw as close to the line of scrimmage as possible with screens, short slants, etc. and it’s honestly awful to watch.

Zachariah Branch the explosive playmaker is leading the team in all receiving categories but only averaging 10.2 yards per catch. These guys are afraid to throw it deep and relying heavily on their strong duo of running backs Nate Frazier and Chauncey Bowens.

A tough test this weekend against the Horns in Athens will be their toughest battle of the remainder of the season. Win this one and an A&M slip up would put them in the SEC title against Bama for a rematch. Don’t count out the test against in-state rivals Ga Tech though.

Mr Chirp doesn’t buy this Georgia team one bit as a legit title contender. Even though the defense is top 20 in most major categories, it’s not the Georgia D that we are used to year in and year out who just shits on offenses every game. They’re bottom of the pack in the nation in takeaways per game and close to bottom as well in sacks.

8) Notre Dame 7-2:

Notre Dame is by far the most annoying team in the country. The toughest opponents they’ve faced all season they took L’s to. Losing by a combined 4 points is a tough pill to swallow. But they’re on a 7 game heater and turning it on at the right time.

The matchup against a ranked Pitt team on the road is their last test of the year but it should be an easy one for them. This team has a top 10 offense and top 15 defense. The most dynamic part of this squad is the running back duo led by Jeremiyah Love who is without a doubt the best RB in college football.

About to eclipse 1k yards on the year, averaging over 6.4 per carry and with 13 TD’s this dude is a freak. Don’t forget about backup Jadarian Price either. He’s over 6 per carry too and has 9 TD’s on the year to himself as well.

Freshman QB CJ Carr is showing he’s a legit NFL prospect throwing for 16 TD’s and 2 INT’s since week 3. This secondary is freakish too, they’re 3rd in the nation in INT’s per game and have 3 players with 3 INT’s right now. A potential upset for them would be vs. Bama where they could give Ty Simpson fits and not have to worry about the ground game.

9) Texas 7-2:

Arch and the boys are having a rollercoaster of a season rattling off squeakers the past few weeks since beating OU in the Red River Rivalry. Give credit where it’s due though, tough wins against OU and Vandy in the SEC are legit W’s.

They have the toughest road left of any team on this list with games at Georgia and against A&M at home to end the season. If this team somehow wins both games they’ll be in the playoff no doubt.

I also have no doubts that they could get some Disney magic from the powers that be to make that reality happen in the weeks ahead. Expect a lot of calls to go their way to force their ass into the playoff.

I’ll be honest, this offense is shitty as fuck. But the defense is legit as hell. Top 10 in a lot of categories including points allowed and yards per play. This team has no rushing attack, but is close to the top at turnover margin.

They rank 5th in the country in sacks per game and 2nd in yards per rushing attempt allowed. This combination gives me confidence they could squeak one out against Georgia, but I think they’ll lose to A&M in the final game of the season in a must watch showdown.

Colin Simmons and Anthony Hill Jr are the real MVP’s of this Longhorn team. If they want any hope at winning out they need a miracle from their rushing attack. Their RB’s are averaging right around 4 yards per clip, that’s not gonna cut it.

10) USC 7-2:

No team has shit the bed worse than USC this year who could easily be undefeated right now. A 2 point fuck up against Illinois thanks to Lincoln Riley’s shitty game management was their first L. They scored way too quick in the final drive of the game leaving time on the clock for Illinois to win it.

The second L was a hard fought battle against Notre Dame on the road in the rain. Another bad beat, the Trojans had the lead 24-21 late in the 3rd and then watched Jadarian Price house the next kickoff. The Trojans then drove the field only for Lincoln to call the worst play of the season.

A wide receiver reverse pass which led to a horrible INT was night night for SC in that one. But this team is legit too good not to sneak into the playoff. Quarterback Jayden Maiava is an animal playing great ball. RB’s King Miller and Waymond Jordan are averaging over 7 yards per carry combined.

The star of the show is WR Makai Lemon. He has 4 games over 100 yards this year and is one of if not the best WR in college football this season. The Trojans rank 20th in the country in sacks per game… besides that the defense is pretty mediocre.

But it’s the offense that deserves matchups against these defenses like OSU, Oregon, Tech, A&M, and Indiana. The Trojans are 1st in the nation in yards per game and 4th in scoring. Win out and this team could be dangerous in the playoff.
